“Welcome Hoax,” Christopher smiles menacingly just over my shoulder, in what appears to be the Afterlife Asylum’s lab. Every head in the room follows the eyeline of the Detective, their task forgotten to greet me with tight smiles. I’m under no illusion they can’t actually see me, but the mute from the train tunnels is my giveaway. A couple of MRA agents are posted around the huge cylinder I recognize all too well, ignoring whatever poor creatures are trapped inside the other tanks.

Even without my senses, the clinical scent of the laboratory washes over me. A lengthy tank I know all too well stands tall near the back of the room. I stroll closer, unable to look away, even though the sight is nauseating. Amber-colored liquid surrounds my physical body as tubes disappear into my skin, melding with my cable tattoos. Above a mask covering half of my face, my indigo hair shifts weightlessly.

“Move towards the tank,” the male voice comes again. The same one who announced my arrival and is leaning against a computer station to my right. A pair of burning gold eyes pierce my spirit, and even though the scientists gravitate towards the Mute from the train tunnels, he doesn’t seem interested in interacting. The Detective pushes a hand through his blue-tipped hair, straightening a leather jacket he seems much more at ease in.

“He’s in a stable condition. Tests indicate no sign of abnormalities and vitals are as expected. We’re awaiting your order to implement the eternal flame, Sir.” A woman steps forward, clutching her clipboard with her chest pushed out proudly. Batting long lashes at Christopher from beneath her thickly-rimmed glasses, a badge on her lab coat marks her as Lead Engineer. Engineer of my fate, it would seem. The center of the room hosts a lengthy table covered in files and printed pages of data.

“Excellent,” Christopher grins. Like a class-A asshole, he pulls up a wheeled leather chair and takes a seat as if about to watch his favorite circus act. It doesn’t surprise me when a young man in a lab coat too long for him rushes over to place a cigar and cutter on the desk nearby. All ready for the pioneering pat on the back Christopher is about to receive for his capturing and experimentations. The worst part is, it’s not even illegal. The Mutes have no rights, no protection and no future. “Everyone to your stations.”

Assistants in lab coats rush around the cylinder, hastily tapping touchpads on the side or checking stats on the closest monitor. One blonde in particular types furiously on a keypad and the same pull that drew me here tugs at my spirit again. Bubbles float through a tube that is attached to the oxygen mask covering my face. Flicking my eyes back and forth, I understand what’s happening but my mind either refuses to believe it or my thought process is struggling to keep up.

“All systems go,” the blonde swivels in her chair to face Christopher. He lifts a hand, beckoning a nearby team over with a flick of two fingers.
